Mastering BIAB Step by Step: The Complete Treatment Procedure

Discover the exact step-by-step procedure for professional BIAB treatments, from precise preparation to safe removal techniques.

In short

A professional BIAB treatment requires meticulous preparation, a thin slip layer followed by a structured apex bead, self-levelling, and curing. Refills occur every three to four weeks by filing down the top layer and rebuilding, while removal involves gentle acetone soaking without prying.

Essential Preparation and Nail Prep

Every successful nail treatment begins with meticulous preparation of the natural nail plate. First, gently push back the cuticles to expose the entire nail surface and ensure no skin remains attached. Next, remove the shine from the natural nail using a fine buffer, taking care not to thin the plate. Dehydrate the surface thoroughly to remove any lingering moisture or oils.

Depending on the specific product manufacturer instructions, apply a bonder or primer if the system requires it for optimal adhesion. Skipping these preparatory steps is a primary cause of premature lifting, which compromises the durability of the overlay. When you study at our akademie classroom, our trainers supervise every detail of this initial stage.

Application of Builder Gel in a Bottle

The application technique dictates both the strength and the aesthetic finish of the finished overlay. Building a strong foundation requires a controlled sequence of product placement and curing under an appropriate lamp.

Proper structural building follows a distinct procedural order that ensures a balanced apex and smooth surface. Master technicians execute these actions in sequence during every client appointment to guarantee uniform results across all ten fingers.

  1. 1

    Slip layer

Apply a thin slip layer of BIAB across the nail without curing it immediately.

  2. 2

    Apex bead

Place a second bead in the centre and guide it towards the cuticle and free edge.

  3. 3

    Self-levelling

Flip the hand to let the gel self-levelling properties create a smooth surface, then cure.

  4. 4

    Shaping and colour

Perform light shaping with a file, apply top coat or gel polish colour on top, cure, and finish with cuticle oil.

Performing Maintenance and Refills

Natural nail growth necessitates regular maintenance appointments to keep the overlay balanced and secure. Clients should return for a refill every three to four weeks depending on their natural nail growth rate and daily hand usage.

During a refill service, file down the top layer of the existing product to reduce bulk and rebalance the structural weight. Rebuild the apex over the newly grown natural nail area without performing a full removal, saving time and protecting the natural plate.

Safe Removal and Product Extraction

Proper removal techniques protect the integrity of the natural nail and prevent trauma to the client's hands. Begin by filing down the top layer of the product to break the seal and allow the removal liquid to penetrate effectively.

Wrap the nails in foil with acetone to dissolve the remaining product safely. Gently push off the softened gel using a suitable tool, and never pry the product off the nail plate. Explore our kurse to see how we teach safe removal protocols.

Common Application Mistakes to Avoid

Beginner technicians frequently encounter specific technical challenges that affect the longevity and appearance of their work. Recognizing these errors early allows students to correct their hand movements and brush control during practice sessions on real models.

Gel flooding the cuticle creates an immediate point of lifting and looks untidy. Applying product too thickly ruins the natural elegance of the hand and causes structural imbalances. Under-curing leaves the gel dull and soft, while skipping preparation guarantees lifting within days.

  2. 2The second bead builds a correct structural apex for nail strength.
  3. 3Refills every three to four weeks avoid the need for full product removal.
  4. 4Safe removal relies on acetone soaking rather than aggressive prying.
